Our house guest this time around is Cavan McLaughlin, broadcaster, creative media practitioner and Senior Lecturer in Media Production at the University of Northampton, with research interests around the role of spirituality and occultism in contemporary visual culture. Cavan is here to talk about his forthcoming book and conference, both titled Trans- States.
No, that phrase does not refer to any sort of identity politics, but it does refer to a sort of radical political notion that the magician, mystic and artists all converge at one point, the proverbial crossroads, the intersection of the liminal and the numinous, and it is only at this intersection where we can truly revolt and bring down all those corrupt and out-of-date systems that only serve the few and not the many.
This is, hands down, one of my favorite chats that I’ve recorded for this podcast, and the first few minutes here are extremely personal, which is why I enjoyed it so much. Cavan and I dug deep within our capital S Selves to erase all borders and boundaries between him and I, and between you and us, and between you and me.
Art, magic, alchemy, creativity, liminal space, and what it truly means to have a human experience - great stuff.
